De Breedhorsten zouden een doodnormaal leven leiden, ware het niet dat hun dochter Caroline zwaar gehandicapt is door een auto-ongeluk. Zij ligt in een ziekenhuisbed In coma, in de woonkamer. In het totaal ontwrichte gezin geeft moeder de moed niet op. Vader, verdrietig en verbitterd, isoleert het gezin meer en meer van de buitenwereld. Plots staat er een vriend van de dochter voor de deur. Als een door God gezonden engel brengt hij verlossing en loutering voor iedereen.
